Key Information for Travelers to Ethiopia

Visa & Immigration Requirements

All foreign visitors to Ethiopia require a visa, except nationals of Kenya and Djibouti. Visas can be obtained in advance from Ethiopian diplomatic missions abroad. Alternatively, travelers may apply for an electronic tourist visa (e-Visa) online through the official government website. We recommend applying for your visa prior to departure to ensure a smooth arrival.

Electricity & Power Supply

Ethiopia uses 220 volts, 50 Hz AC electricity. Power plugs are European-style two-pin sockets. Electricity supply is generally stable in Addis Ababa and major regional cities. In the event of power outages, most hotels are equipped with backup generators. For travel to rural areas, we recommend carrying extra camera batteries and power banks, as electricity can be irregular.

Safety

Ethiopia is widely regarded as one of the safer destinations in Africa. Visitors can generally walk freely in main urban areas with a good sense of security. As with travel anywhere in the world, basic precautions and local guidance are recommended.

The local currency is the Ethiopian Birr (ETB), subdivided into cents. Banknotes are available in denominations of 200, 100, 50, 10, and 5 birr. Currency exchange is straightforward and can be done at:

Climate & Best Time to Visit

Despite its equatorial location, Ethiopia enjoys a moderate climate due to its high altitude. In the highlands, daytime temperatures rarely exceed 25°C, while nighttime temperatures—especially in December and January—can drop to around 10°C. Hottest months: April–May (before the main rainy season) Short rains: Late January to early March (irregular) Main rainy season: June to mid-September Omo Valley rains: March–May In high-altitude areas such as the Simien and Bale Mountains, temperatures can drop to near freezing, and strong winds are common. Best time to visit Ethiopia: October to January, when rains have ended and landscapes are lush and green.
