Escape the city and discover the natural beauty of Wenchi Crater Lake, located about 155 km west of Addis Ababa. This scenic journey takes you through the Gefersa Reservoir, the capital’s main water supply and an important bird-watching area, home to a wide variety of bush and wetland species—including several of Ethiopia’s endemic birds.
Wenchi is an extinct volcanic crater, rising to an altitude of approximately 3,380 meters above sea level, and enclosing a stunning high-altitude lake. The area is rich in both natural and cultural attractions. Surrounding the lake are traditional Oromo villages, forested canyons, and geothermal features including hot springs and a hot waterfall. The forests are home to Colobus monkeys and other wildlife, adding to the area’s tranquil atmosphere.
From the drop-off point, enjoy a short walk or optional mule ride (about 1.5 km) to the crater rim, where breathtaking panoramic views of the lake and surrounding countryside await. Visit the historic monastery on one of the lake’s islands, and take time to soak in the peaceful highland environment.
After the crater visit, continue to Ambo town for lunch and relaxation before returning to Addis Ababa.
